Music Curriculum Intent
At Aspire we value Music as an important part of our curriculum and we intend to provide an exciting and vibrant musical experience for all our pupils.
We aim for our curriculum to provide children with opportunities to listen to, appraise, play, perform, mprovise, compose and enjoy Music. We want to encourage our pupils to foster an appreciation for a wide range of genres and to begin to develop their understanding of the history of Music.
Our Music curriculum will ensure that pupils acquire musical skills and understanding of musical concepts. Through the learning of Music pupils will also develop their ability to express their ideas and creativity.
Music Curriculum Implementation
The Music curriculum at Aspire is taught in 3 discrete units taught over the school year. These units are taught across the whole school and are adapted for the age and stage of each pupil. The content to be taught is clearly set out in knowledge organisers for each unit. The units cover a range of music skills and cover all National Curriculum objectives over a 4 year cycle.
Teachers use the online platform Charanga to deliver structured lessons where pupils have opportunities to sing, listen and respond to a selection of pieces from various genres, improvise and compose, and to play and perform. A specialist music teacher also teaches each class two units a year where children have further opportunities to develop their skills on tuned and untuned instruments.
Music Curriculum Impact
The impact of our Music curriculum is measured in a variety of ways: development of pupils’ music skills, evidence of pupil participation, knowledge of musicians and musical genres studied, questioning during lesson time, listening to child-led discussion, using images/videos of pupils’ performances, talking to pupils across the school about their learning, and monitoring of evidence slides throughout the year.
By teaching Music skills and knowledge at Aspire we hope children will:
- Be confident to have a go at singing, appraising, improvising, composing and performing
- Produce musical compositions and performances that they are proud of and be able to express their ideas and creativity through music
- Have knowledge of a range of different songs, compositions, musicians and genres, and to be able to talk about their likes and dislikes
- Use their enjoyment and confidence in music to help them engage in other curriculum subjects
