Geography Curriculum Intent

Our Geography curriculum is planned to inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world we live in and the people within it.We deliver a curriculum that teaches the children to develop an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and important environmental issues that are impacting on the world we live in.

The lessons are intended to improve children’s geographical vocabulary, map skills and geographical knowledge and provide opportunities for consolidation, challenge and variety.

We aim to ignite a love of learning, fascination and understanding of the world around us that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Geography Curriculum Implementation

The Geography curriculum at Aspire is covered in 3 units taught over the school year. These units are taught across the whole school and differentiated for the age and stage of each pupil. The content to be taught is clearly set out in knowledge organisers for each unit and includes relevant vocabulary to be taught. The units cover a range of both human and physical geography and cover all National Curriculum objectives over a 4 year cycle.

Each unit is planned using 4 key questions:

  • Where in the world?
  • What would we see?
  • What skills do I need to be a geographer?
  • And What impact does it have?

Where possible themes include hooks for the children which may be visiting workshops, whole school curriculum days or a relevant school trip. These both enhance the topic and encourage a love and excitement for learning.

Teachers are also encouraged to use a range of resources such as videos, photographs, maps , atlases and globes during lessons to help create immersive learning experiences. Careful consideration is given to any worksheets used to ensure they are relevant and enhance learning.

All classrooms have a geography learning wall that is used throughout the unit to record answers to the key questions and showcase pupils' work and experiences.

Geography Curriculum Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is measured in a variety of ways: questioning during lesson time, listening to child-led discussion, using images/videos of children’s practical learning, marking children’s written work, talking to pupils across the school about their learning, and book monitoring at the end of each geography unit.

By teaching Geography skills and knowledge at Aspire we hope children will:

  • Have a curiosity about the world around them and be inspired to visit  different countries to learn more about their people and cultures
  • Develop a knowledge and fascination of key Human and physical processes
  • Have developed a range of geographical skills and knowledge such as knowing where different countries are in the World and using maps and atlases.
  • Have a wider vocabulary of geographical terms.
  • Have a greater understanding of what a precious place our World is and how best to look after it.
