Art Curriculum Intent

At Aspire we value Art and Design as an important part of our curriculum, giving our children the opportunities to develop and extend their skills and express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

We aim for our curriculum to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Pupils learn about significant artists across a range of mediums, periods of history and cultural backgrounds.

We strive to ignite a love of creativity and interest in the Arts.

Art Curriculum Implementation

The Art curriculum at Aspire is taught in 2 discrete skills units taught over the school year. These units are taught across the whole school and adapted for the age and stage of each pupil. The content to be taught is clearly set out in knowledge organisers for each unit and includes key artists. The units cover a range of art skills and cover all National Curriculum objectives over a 4 year cycle.

Throughout the curriculum there are lots of opportunities for cross curricular art sessions practising skills and developing their enthusiasm and enjoyment for art in other subjects.

Pupils use sketch books to practise their skills and techniques and all artwork is evidenced on google slides.

Pupils art is proudly displayed around the school in classrooms, corridors and the school hall.

Pupils have the opportunity to attend a weekly art after school club which focus on different topics and extends the pupils skills and interests.

 Art Curriculum Impact

The impact of our Art curriculum is measured in a variety of ways: development of pupils art skills, evidence of completed pieces of artwork, knowledge of famous artists studied,  questioning during lesson time, listening to child-led discussion, using images/videos of children’s practical learning, talking to pupils across the school about their learning, and monitoring of evidence slides throughout the year.

By teaching Art skills and knowledge at Aspire we hope children will:

    • Be confident to have a go at exploring new skills and techniques
    • Produce pieces of art that they are proud of and reflects their own unique style and development of skills
    • Have knowledge of a range of different artists and to be able to talk about their likes and dislikes
    • Use their enjoyment and confidence in art to help then engage in other curriculum subjects
